Gender identity is a person’s internal sense of who they are in terms of gender. It reflects how someone experiences and understands their own gender, which may or may not align with the sex they were assigned at birth. Gender identity is about how a person feels inside, rather than physical traits like genitalia or chromosomes. People may identify as male, female, both, neither, or something else entirely.
Some common gender identities include cisgender, when a person’s gender matches their assigned sex at birth; transgender, when it does not; non-binary or genderqueer, for those who do not fit strictly into male or female categories; and agender, for those who identify as having no gender.
Gender identity is distinct from gender expression, which is how a person presents themselves to the world through clothing, behavior, or style. Respecting someone’s gender identity by using their chosen name and pronouns is important for affirming who they are. Ultimately, gender identity is about who a person feels they are at their core, regardless of external expectations or appearances.
