Chapter 1: Gender, Sex, and Sexuality ਲਿੰਗ, ਲਿੰਗ ਪਹਚਾਣ ਅਤੇ ਯੌਨਤਾ

Pronouns are the words we use to refer to people in the third person. In Punjabi, we already use a gender-neutral pronoun when speaking about elders, in a respectful manner, or when referring to multiple people.
ਸਰਵਨਾਮ ਉਹ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ ਜੋ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਤੀਜੇ ਪੁਰਖ ਵਿੱਚ ਕਿਸੇ ਵਿਅਕਤੀ ਲਈ ਵਰਤਦੇ ਹੋ। ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਵਿੱਚ, ਅਸੀਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਹੀ ਲਿੰਗ-ਨਿਰਪੱਖ ਸਰਵਨਾਮ ਵਰਤਦੇ ਹਾਂ ਜਦੋਂ ਅਸੀਂ ਕਿਸੇ ਵੱਡੇ ਬਜ਼ੁਰਗ ਨਾਲ ਆਦਰ ਸਹਿਤ ਗੱਲ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਾਂ ਜਾਂ ਕਈ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਬਾਰੇ ਗੱਲ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਾਂ।
Punjabi is naturally gender-neutral in many contexts:
“ਉਹ” (uh) can mean he, she, or they — depending on context.
When speaking respectfully to elders, we often use ਤੁਸੀਂ (tusī̃) even for one person — another form of neutral/respectful language.
He / Him ਉਹ / ਉਸਨੂੰ
Typically used for someone who identifies as male

Making assumptions about someone’s gender identity can often lead to exclusion and harm. Learning to ask for and use someone’s pronouns is a small but meaningful step in treating 2SLGBTQIA+ people with decency and respect. Affirming a person’s right to be addressed the way they choose is a simple yet powerful way to support mental health. Inclusive pronoun usage fosters a sense of belonging and is an important step toward creating safer, more welcoming spaces for 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals.
